no man is an island
when they decide that enough is enough,
as they turn on the lighthouses,
tune into the radio tower,
sing into the microphone
about all the pain they've gained
as they reach out to their fellow islands,
connecting with one and relating with another,
not noticing their presence growing,
like grape vines that intervene,
and forget each other as they realize together
that they are islands no more
for their land mass has grown,
for the vast sea no longer surrounds
the ever-growing, steadfast mound,
an island once, after the lending of hands,
now a part of our homeland.
